Rabbit Hash, Kentucky | Why This Tiny Town Keeps Inspiring My Photography

Image
Sometimes the best photography adventures happen close to home. In this installment of my Leica Summer Series, I take the Leica Q on a relaxing Sunday drive through the Kentucky countryside to the historic river town of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. From the iconic Rabbit Hash General Store to unexpected river traffic on the Ohio River, this tiny town never disappoints. Along the way, I capture photographs, share a little local history, enjoy a MoonPie and Diet Coke, and revisit an old country church and cemetery to recreate an image that inspired me through another photographer's work. The Leica Q's fixed 28mm lens continues to push me outside my comfort zone, forcing me to slow down, see differently, and appreciate the experience of photography as much as the final image. If you enjoy photography, small-town America, Leica cameras, road trips, and discovering hidden gems, I think you'll enjoy this one. If you have suggestions for future Leica Summer Series videos, leave the...

Cincinnati's Oldest Market Looks Better Than You'd Expect

Image
Join me as I take my Leica Q on a street photography walk through historic Findlay Market and Cincinnati's famous Over-the-Rhine district. Founded in 1852, Findlay Market is Ohio's oldest continuously operating public market and one of the most historic destinations in the Midwest. In this episode of my Leica Summer Series, I explore the market, photograph architecture, street scenes, local businesses, murals, and some of Cincinnati's rich brewing history. Along the way, we'll visit iconic locations near Samuel Adams Brewery, Rhinegeist Brewery, and discover why Over-the-Rhine remains one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in the country. For this outing, I challenged myself by shooting the Leica Q entirely in automatic mode while capturing RAW images that were later processed using DxO PhotoLab 9 and PureRAW 6. Whether you're interested in street photography, Leica cameras, Cincinnati history, travel destinations, or simply looking for photography inspiration,...

Buffalo Trace Distillery Photography | Leica Q Performance

Image
Experience Buffalo Trace Distillery through the Leica Q as part of my Leica Q Summer Series. My wife and I made a quick trip to Frankfort, Kentucky to pick up some bourbon, and while I couldn’t film inside, I brought the Leica Q along to capture the historic grounds, old brick buildings, and the atmosphere of America’s oldest continuously operating distillery. Buffalo Trace has been producing bourbon since the late 1700s and even stayed open during Prohibition by making “medicinal whiskey.” The property is full of character, history, and incredible photographic opportunities. In this video, I’m sharing the images I captured during our visit — including a few high‑ISO indoor shots that show how well the Leica Q still performs. If you enjoy this style of video, let me know in the comments. I live within a short drive of dozens of distilleries, and I’d be happy to photograph more of them for the Leica Q Summer Series. Thanks for watching — remember to like, comment, and subscribe. Stay...

From Barber Shops to Barns — A Leica Perspective

Image
Join me for a peaceful morning photo walk through Walton, Kentucky as I kick off my new Leica Summer Series using the classic Leica Q with its fixed 28mm f/1.7 lens. In this video, we explore small-town Northern Kentucky at sunrise, photographing veterans memorials, local businesses, country barns, and everyday life using only a handheld setup. Along the way, I share why I love simplifying photography gear, what it’s like shooting with an 11-year-old Leica camera in 2026, and why small towns often make the best places for storytelling photography. We stop by local favorites like Bailey Jaynes Bakery, Taylor’s Barber Shop, and of course Waffle House, while capturing the quiet atmosphere of Walton in the early morning light. This video is part travel photography, part street photography, and part landscape photography adventure — all focused on enjoying photography with minimal gear and a simple approach. 📷 Gear Used: • Leica Q (2015) • 28mm f/1.7 Lens • DJI Pocket 3 • Handheld Phot...

Full Frame vs Medium Format: Which Should You Buy?

Image
After an incredible photography trip through Australia, I had a fascinating conversation with travel photographer Brendan Van Son about sensor size, dynamic range, megapixels, and whether medium format cameras are truly worth the cost for landscape photography. We discussed Micro Four Thirds, full frame, Fuji APS-C, Canon, Nikon, and even medium format systems like the Hasselblad X2D and Fujifilm GFX series. Is dynamic range really the biggest advantage? Are megapixels overrated? And should landscape photographers consider switching to medium format? As someone who shoots the OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mark II alongside my Leica Q, this conversation really made me rethink what matters most in photography gear. Would you switch to medium format for landscape photography? Or is Micro Four Thirds and full frame already more than enough? Brendan Van Son: https://www.youtube.com/@BrendanvanSon
